How do I stop a column of bookmarks showing on every page. Waste of space.

Sounds that you have the bookmarks sidebar open.

You can toggle the Bookmarks sidebar via View > Sidebar > bookmarks or Ctrl+B.

Press F10 or tap the Alt key to bring up the "Menu Bar" temporarily if the Menu Bar is hidden.
