thunderbird and gmail don't work for me after all the suggestions

I spent hours going through suggestions to make thunderbird and gmail play together. googleapis seem to connect for calendar and something like davcards, but I can't seem to get oauth to pass muster even after trying several time to get mail for my gmail account. I am accepting all cookies, and java is turned on.

What am I missing? I am using thunderbird 102.3.0 (64-bit) on raspberry pi. I get a message saying that imap.google.com is not accepting my login. I am using oauth2 and startttls

The servers are imap.gmail.com and smtp.gmail.com.
