can no longer set/use firefox as my browser

I have Firefox installed on a LG V30+ (Android 7.1.2) but the phone will not allow me to set/ get it to work as my preferred browser. I can set Firefox as the browser in the App settings but that's about it. When selecting the Firefox icon and typing in the search request it does not offer the option to use Firefox (58) and searches are done using the Google search engine. I have uninstalled and re-installed to no avail. I don't have this issue with my laptop and previous LG G4 (Android 6) phone. What am i missing? Thank you in advance for any suggestions
