How do I update Developer Edition on Ubuntu now that the Aurora ppa has been phased out?

Ok, so I understand the recent edition to deprecate the Aurora channel. However, this has stuck my Firefox Developer Edition on 54.0 because I had installed it through the Aurora ppa on Ubuntu. What is the best way to update this? I want to keep everything on my Firefox, so a new install from the compressed file won't do it. I've seen this question: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1159951 but the answer just says "The DE version has been discontinued and you need to use the beta version to be able to receive updates" which is incorrect according the answerer's own source; devedition is still sticking around, but it just uses the beta channel. Any ideas? I'm totally fine with using the auto-update feature inside Firefox instead of the package manager, I just have no idea how to seamlessly replace my version from the ppa with the tarball from the website.

OK never mind, I replaced the contents of /usr/lib/firefox with those of the tarball. It worked, but there are two stupid bugs, one of which I have to report...

The DE version still uses the Aurora update channel, only the version number is the same as the Beta release although it takes longer to get an update.
