T/B crashes when trying to open Firefox from an email referral tab

When I try to open a referral tab (e.g. when it says "see here" for information) from an email in my browser (Firefox) - Thunderbird will not open it and crashes. Get the crash report and fill in, but no change. My Thunderbird is 52.1.0 32 bit.

crash ID is a string of the form BP-xxxxxxx-xxx...
