Can I delete the entries in the "profile - cache" folder?

Using Windows XP and Thunderbird 38.0.1 (portable edition). In the folder, "Data -> profile ->" there are two subfolders named "cache" and "cache.trash3362" which seem to have grown to such an extent that they have caused Thunderbird to load very slowly. Can I empty those folders without any ill effects?

On the toolbar > Options> Advanced > Network and disk space press clear now.
