Now it has become impossible to use with Windows 8.1 because it takes about 5 seconds to do anything.

I love Thunderbird and have been using it for years.

I want to continue using it because it was so great all these years.

However, I'm trying to do business on a daily basis and with windows 8.1 and thunderbird 24.6.0 it's quite impossible. I click on a message and it takes 5 seconds to get over the "Thunderbird Not Responding" grey-out screen, and then it comes back to life.

I am losing hours a week waiting for thunderbird to respond.

I see other people have the problem and have asked if you will address it? PLEASE don't make me go to another email client.

Hey Chris,

I went to your suggestion (I think it was you), saying to remove or disable McAfee. I disabled it as well as all the other extensions except the stationary, and I actually timed it. To highlight and delete one email it took 30 seconds before it responded.

I can't delete it. Just disable it. And then I removed everything else.

I also saw a suggestion to uncheck the global search and indexer.
