Search box stops responding; error in browser console

All of a sudden the search box is not behaving itself.

Google search suggestions are working but when I press enter, nothing happens.

It doesn't matter which engine I use.

The Browser Console, show the following error every time I press enter in the search box

TypeError: this.old_handleSearchCommand is not a function searchsite-browser.js:204

A restart will fix it for a while but it starts happening again.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

There had been no updates to the addons when it started.

But while googling around to try and figure it out, I came across this post which mentioned running out of free space as a possible cause.

And indeed, in the past week or so, I had on a few occasions run out of disk space.
