How do filters work with threads?
I am in the midst of the long process of moving most (not all!) of my gmail from the gmail server to TBird, using filters as discussed in this thread.
I've started by first using filters on less important emails (ie so that no true disaster occurs if something goes horribly wrong). As I do so, I have questions!
For example, let's say I use a filter to: copy all the emails from @someone.org to a local folder then delete those emails (from the server)
What happens if one of those emails happens to be within a thread, including emails from people who don't match the filter (ie are not @someone.org). Have I broken the thread forever, ie, has something gone horribly wrong? If so, how do I prevent this behavior/have the entire thread move along with the targeted value? If not, I don't see how I can move email without breaking threads, which is a bit of a problem.
(Also - whoops, I see I should update, but the question remains.)

yeah, I would have replied to that message thread you mention, But it has been archived. Seriously how to make something simple complex 101 is what I read there.
Filters apply to individual email not thereads so we can kill that discussion now as filter have nothing to do with threads at all. So Moving a message from a thread into another folder will break the threading in the current folder context. You can right click the individual message and select view in conversation and get the threaded view. but not by default.;

It was droipped like a hot potato in your previous topic, but Google takeout is the gold standard for getting you mail locally. David likes IMAP, Io not. IT simply adds a leyer of complication to a straight forward process. Getting your mail out of Google.

2) Remove *most* of the above from gmail's server to avoid the data limit, but... 3) Keep, perhaps some months or a year of activity on gmail's server so I can access recent items from wherever.

Questions: 1) I have 10s of thousands (more?) of msgs, many with attachments. Is it better to just set up TBIrd and let it grab all the messages, or start by using Google TakeOut?
Use Takeout. Google guarantee complete copies of everything. IMAP does not.
2) I presume I use IMAP vs. POP?
IMAP is syncronised and will result in you having local cache and a server that is still the canonical copy. POP will only give you the "inbox" mail so again not a complete set.
3) To preserve messages on my harddrive, I could archive to a local folder. Then I could safely delete those same messages on the gmail web interface?
I have addressed that already.
4) If this turns into a disaster, can I just remove the entire account from TBird without suffering a loss of my entire email history?
If you use Google takeout you will not have any chance of loss. YOu can still import the mail to Thunderbird, but you risk nothing and have a guarantee from your provider that they will include all mail in your takeout request.
5) Any insurance maneuvers to prevent the disaster of accidentally losing my entire email history while attempting to set this up? (Obviously will need to be religious about backing up my own system, though keeping a year of email on the gmail server offers a bit of insurance once the set up is successful.)
Use takeout as it make a separate copy of everything. You would have top delete both your mail on gmails mail server and your takeout files to loose everything. Difficult to do by accident.
I am really hoping to avoid creating a unholy mess of my email/spending a week trying to fix it. (Indeed, I have avoided this project for years for this reason, but I really, really want to do this.)
Based on your latest posting you are well on your way down a rabbit hole that would have no purpose at all if you used takeout.

The conversations view mimics the Google conversation view of mail which is entirely different to Thunderbird threading.
As I said; Use takeout. note takeout creates one ZIP file per label. So if you have multiple label on a single message each label zip will contain a copy of that message, removing you concern about breaking threads. Use the import export tools addon to import the takeout files to Thunderbird local folders account Use the Conversdations addon to make things like Gmail.

I believe that Google Takeout provides an option to get all messages in a single mbox file and an option to get messages in one mbox file per label.
