My mom had this problem, but it didn't occur on my computer. I upgraded her from version 3.x to v8 but it didn't help. By going through the troubleshooting steps listed above (thanks mha007!), I narrowed it down to the Adblock Plus extension. However, that seemed weird since we both have it installed, so I dug a little deeper and within the Adblock Plus Preferences (under the Tools menu in Firefox), she had an exception for http://bl165w.blu165.mail.live.com/default.aspx (or something like that). I unchecked that and it's back to normal for mom. She owes me dinner or chocolate chip cookies (or both). Hope this provides a fix for others as well!
