Hello John,

Firefox automatically creates backups of your bookmarks, which can be helpful if your bookmarks are lost or missing. To recover them, follow the instructions below.

1. Click the menu button , then click Bookmarks.
2. Scroll to the bottom and click Manage Bookmarks.
3. At the top of the Library window, click on Import and Backup and select Restore.
4. Click the date of the bookmark backup you want to recover.
5. In the new window that appears, click OK.

Your bookmarks from the selected date should now be restored.

I tried this restore, however when I bring up the restore files it is empty. Even now when I log on to a web site my history files are blank.

Hi John, if you can't see your bookmarks or history, Firefox might have one of these issues:

(1) Started up in the wrong profile (would only show a handful of built-in bookmarks). Since your Restore menu is empty, this seems like the most likely explanation. Try the steps in the first section of the following article: Recover lost or missing Bookmarks.

(2) Places database that stores bookmarks/history is locked/corrupted. The first step, if you haven't already, is to do a normal shutdown and/or restart of your system. Restarting Windows can help by freeing up locked files, completing any deferred updates, and resolving temporary file permission issues.

Open Firefox's Troubleshooting Information page using any of these methods:

• "3-bar" menu button > Help > More Troubleshooting Information
• (menu bar) Help > More Troubleshooting Information
• type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

Near the bottom, there is a section titled Places Database -- that's the file which stores history and bookmarks. Click the button labeled Verify Integrity. There may be a 10-15 second delay before results appear.

If all is well, the report that appears below the button should start with:

> Task: checkIntegrity
+ The places.sqlite database is sane
+ The favicons.sqlite database is sane
> Task: invalidateCaches
+ The caches have been invalidated
> Task: checkCoherence
+ The database is coherent

Does yours say both databases are "sane", or something else? You can select and copy the report, and then paste it into a reply for review and comment.
