Hi, hoping someone could help as I am struggling to get my information back. I am using Ubuntu Cinnamon.

Thunderbird crashed last night, wouldn't work, tried safe mode. Nothing fixed it. It hung when opening up and after 30 seconds said force quit. So I was forced to reinstall. I did a manual backup but not using the inbuilt tool as I couldn't get into Thunderbird. I just copied the data from username/.thunderbird

After spending a long time uninstalling. Because it reached 78% and then crashed on uninstall. Eventually after reading various pages on the internet I managed to reinstall from the Ubuntu software manager using the latest snap version. (Which I am not sure was what was actually installed previously).

However having used thunderbird for nearly 20 years or so. I have a username/.thunderbird folder. And when I moved to this platform, I have a snap/thunderbird/common/.thunderbird folder.

I installed this new distro 2 years ago, and remember having issues getting my data into the system under Snap. But eventually got it to work somehow back then.

However since reinstalling I cannot see the last 2 years of emails, archives or data. It has launched into a 2 year old profile. I appear to have lost most of the emails from the archive folders (but kept the folders) removed all of the personal folders but then dumped all those emails into my inbox. Giving me 6500 emails that were in various personal folders. (I don't get 6500 emails in a year so don't know what has happened.) It has even changed all of the new dates to the US format, so nothing makes any sense.

I now have 2 Thunderbird profiles, over 12GB in size. And have apparently lost 2 years of my life. But reading support pages, suggests I should be okay because thunderbird doesn't delete data when you reinstall?

I have looked through various other threads which talk about pointing it at the profiles and mail boxes, however nothing works.

Any help much needed.

whilst all incoming emails are visible, many do not display their message header in the Inbox List. such as the one captured with a screen shot. Several have displayed in this manner over the last few days as can be seen.

I have a new (to me) Microsoft Surface pc with an ARM processor. After a very recent update to Windows 11,my entire Thunderbird installation has disappeared and I have been forced to use the Web to access my emails from Posteo.de Can you assist me please?

I am writing to express my frustration with the new Account Hub interface in Thunderbird. Specifically, the decision to remove the password field from the initial setup screen is a massive downgrade in user experience.While I understand this was likely designed to accommodate OAuth2 and web-popup logins, it completely breaks down for users setting up accounts with custom domains or standard IMAP/SMTP authentication.Because the password field is hidden upfront, Thunderbird successfully connected to my incoming mail server but completely failed to save or authenticate my outgoing (SMTP) server settings. I spent hours troubleshooting a "cannot find server" error, only to realize the root cause was that the Account Hub never gave me a place to input my password for the outgoing server.Hiding core credentials like passwords doesn't make the app "simpler"—it makes troubleshooting invisible errors a nightmare for users. Please consider bringing back the standard password input field on the very first setup screen, or at least making it optional for manual configurations. My current blocker is I've tried to disable the Account Hub in my settings just to make Thunderbird usable but it is bot changing back to the old add new mail account screen. Please help.

I use Thunderbird all the time as my email on a desktop PC.

For several emails, especially some from yesterday the Correspondent and the subject have  ?crossed?

For example: an email looked from the Correspondent list as if sent from my energy provider but the message was from a Garden Centre. It's not a one-off; another message looked like from a magazine but was a receipt for a purchase. They were not consecutive so it's not as if the list has 'slipped' by one or two. I think it's happened before but not as worrysome.

Is there a reason or solution please?

I'm now scared to delete unwanted emails without time consuming checking each one in detail.

After the crash this morning (19/9/26) I cannot receive or send emails but can access existing emails (open them as well) I spoke to Telstra & they tested my bigpond.net.au account & advised all working So must be Thunderbird. In dealing with Telstra I changed my password. I have tried the old passwod & the new password but error message comes up log in to "Telstra account [redacted] @bigpond.net.au (POP3) failed" as I cannot receive emails can I be contacted via [redacted] or [redacted] @gmail.com Hoping this can be fixed Thanks Peter Carson Cleveland, Queensland

I downloaded Thunderbird on my new Windows 11 laptop and began setup by entering my full name and email address ([redacted]@utexas.edu, operated by Gmail). The next screen asks for my "email account password." I entered my Google password that allows me to access my email at Gmail (https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#inbox). But "Authentication failed," and I am stuck! I cannot finish installing Thunderbird. I have used Thunderbird for many years on my prior laptop (Windows 10).

I have recently closed my yahoo mail account, removed all traces from Thunderbird, but when I start Thunderbird, after a few seconds, I get a Yahoo sign in screen over the top of Thunderbird

It appears that when I invert the sorting order of messages by Date, it does not affect the order of messages in a threaded conversation.

Is this deliberate or a known issue?

Any solution to sort everything with the newest messages at the top, that is: - Messages - And messages within a thread

Thunderbird has been receiving emails on my PC from Bell Sympatico for years, then suddenly stopped in July 2026 without my changing any settings, and I have to go to the Bell server instead.

My Left click to open links from my emails has stopped working. I have to right click and select Open Link. I have tried everything, tried going through some of the config editor options i saw people mention for this issue and its all set to True already. There is no data besides PDF under the settings / attachments section. So cant change anything there. I tried a new profile, no go. I did a full uninstall and delete profile and started again, still same issue.

Left click to open links for everything else on my computer like firefox etc. Just cant open links through thunderbird. It used to work, it seems to have stopped around the same time as the latest update but i cant be sure about that. Only stopped working the last few days,

Hello people, I've just upgraded my Thinderbird because my inbox didn't load on opening the programme. I guess I have made a huge mistake somewhere in the process, because my whole archive has disappeared. I very much hope it still exists somewhere and that I will be able to restore it with your help. My TB installation got corrupted due to a hardware/disk issue. On restoring it from backup TB keeps trying to download all messages again. I know this is something to do with the popstate.dat file but I can't seem to stop it. What do I need to do?

Also, I had never noticed this before (because I never looked at the TB file system) but TB created multiple folders for the email account.pop.mail.yahoo-1.com up to pop.mail.yaho-4.com. Why does it do this and is there a way to get back to just one file? Is this something to do with TB crashing or what?

Is it using all of these files or just the latest and how do I know? All of these folders have a popstat.dat file and one has multiple following the popstat-1.dat etc.

I've no idea how to recover from this. Any help would be much appreciated.

I have posted another question about my corrupted TB profile and restoring it. Having done the restore and looked through the profile folder it is clear that this is full of old files that are no longer supported/needed.

Is there a utility that removes these old files?

I'm not sure if TB updates should remove them but it doesn't appear to have done so.

When I read https://kb.mozillazine.org/Files_and_folders_in_the_profile_-_Thunderbird it is clear that there are so many of these that doing it manually would be prone to error. That resource also says it does not know what some of the files actually do.

Is there a better resource that lists just the latest files maintained by Mozilla?

If I do a new export does it only export the files it needs? The last time I ran an export the resulting zip did not contain all the files from the TB installation but I have no idea why.

For the past several months the saved passwords, for my Comcast account, have had to be reset. When viewed the password vault still shows the old but correct password. It happens after a restart required for a Windows Update. I put in a dummy password, reboot, put the original password, reboot and I'm back and working as it was in the past.

Isn't password manager suppose to save the password until changed or deleted? It had in the past!
