Video problems after FF updates?
This is a follow up to a question I asked a few weeks ago.
Video has stopped working properly Firefox after the update to version 59, 64 bit I had probems after the previous update, but eventually I resolved it by creating a new profile. I have tried everything since the last update, reset, reinstall, safe mode, new profile, performance settings etc.
I have two Windows 10 computers (ASUS Laptop Home edition and Toshiba Laptop Pro edition). As this has occurred on two different laptops I am fairly sure this is a FF problem that Mozilla will have to fix. The latest update has only caused the problem on the ASUS, the Toshiba is fine so far .
This must be escalated and solved by Mozilla. I am not the only one with these or other problems. I cannot and will not accept that ever time there is an update to FF that I have to spend hours resolving problems and in the latest case not even succeeding. Mozilla's reputation has already been damaged by this and other problems. Is it caused by the 64 bit version? If so we must be allowd to revert fully to the 32 bit version and continue with normal updates to that version. Mozilla is becoming like Microsoft, i.e. unreliable and unacceptable. I am already using Edge more than FF and if the problems continue I will reluctantly permanently uninstall FF, which would be a shame after 10 years of generally vdery good service.

Hi, sorry you feel that way. I suggest try this : SAFE MODE
- https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Safe+Mode
- https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes
In Firefox Safe mode these changes are effective:
- all extensions are disabled (about:addons)
- default theme is used (no persona)
- userChrome.css and userContent.css are ignored (chrome folder)
- default toolbar layout is used (file: localstore-safe.rdf)
- Javascript JIT compilers are disabled (prefs: javascript.options.*jit)
- hardware acceleration is disabled (Options > Advanced > General)
- plugins are not affected
- preferences are not affected
TEST If the issue has gone then please try :
Please Refresh but do this 1st: Delete your Cookies and Cache and TEST.
- https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles
then
TEST....... If no issues then Extensions which need to be added back in 1 at a time and tested ..... Or it is your Profile : Make a new one and test ...:
If is your Profile :
- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox
Note: Any customization will revert back to default, you will also need to reinstall Extensions.
As well there is always this option : uninstall Firefox. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files , C:\Program Files(x86) & C:\ProgramData Then restart system. Then run Windows Disk Cleanup. (Note: This should be Pinned and run Weekly, If never done below expect 10's of gig's) Then run it again and click the button that says Cleanup System Files. Note: your Firefox Profile is saved. But you should make a back up before you do :
- https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/export-firefox-bookmarks-to-backup-or-transfer
Reinstall with Current Release Firefox 59.0 with a Full Version Installer
Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.
Following the latest updateto FF (59.01), video is now working ok on both my computers. However on the Toshiba computer it only works properly when options/default preferences are unticked and hardware accleration is unticked (something not right there).
I do not know if the latest update solved the problem on the ASUS by a specific fix intended to do so or just by good fortune. Therefore I will not feel confident that the problem is fully solved until there have been few more updates and no further problems with video emerge.
Thank you for your help with this.
Hi, there appears to be an issue that only affects users who have turned off cleartype font rendering within their windows settings. So a workaround for the moment would either be to turn cleartype back on or disabling hardware acceleration in Firefox: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/performance-settings
This could be your answer for the other one.
