If I want to open a new tab I can't.

If I am on one tab and want to open another to view something else it will not let me open another tab, although it will open another tab automatically when I press certain links. I just cannot open another tab myself.

Start Firefox in Use Troubleshoot Mode in Firefox to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
