I have Windows 7 and updated to Firefox 29.0, now I experience a firefox crash every couple minutes. How can I fix this?
I have a Windows 7 laptop, I updated to Firefox 29.0 recently and now Firefox is totally unworkable. The page crashes every couple minutes on average, sometimes it last for 10 minutes or so, much more often it crashes before fully loading my home page.
I tried removing a lot of my add-ons, I assume one of them is the problem. I couldn't remove some of them and the problem persisted so I tried to reset Firefox. Reseting Firefox causes a crash every time I try it, whether I'm in safe-mode or not.
So finally I resorted to uninstalling and re-installing the program. After doing so, I'm in the same boat. I still can't reset the thing and it still crashes all the time.
Please tell me there's a way I can stop using Chrome??? :(

I'm assuming it's related to hardware acceleration. To be sure, can you start by giving us the troubleshooting information from the Firefox installation that's having problems. This is an essential step in troubleshooting.
- Click the Firefox button at the top left, then click the Help menu and select Troubleshooting Information from the sub-menu. If you don't have a Firefox button, click the Help menu at the top and select Troubleshooting Information from the menu.
Now, a new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.
- At the top of the page, you should see a button that says "Copy text to clipboard". Click it.
- Now, go back to your forum post and click inside the reply box. Press Ctrl+V to paste all the information you copied into the forum post.

BTW : Had to cut out all the crash reports over an hour ago because the post broke the 10,000 character limit. Also I can only get to that tab if I'm in safe mode, trying to open one of the help tabs outside of safe-mode causes a crash. Some of the addons it says are disabled aren't really.
Well, this is new....
I've never seen this crash signature before.

Can you try to start Firefox in Safe Mode to see if Firefox works properly with no error? You can start Firefox in Safe Mode below:
- Windows/Mac: Go to Help > Restart with add-ons disabled
- Linux: Run firefox -safe-mode in the Terminal/Konsole
If Firefox opens up fine with no problems, it's probably one of your extensions that's causing the issue. You can re-enable your add-ons one by one until you find the one that causes the issue upon being re-enabled.
From your System Details, it looks like user.js is currently active in Firefox. The user.js file is only present if you or other software has created this file and normally it wouldn't be there.
You can delete a possible user.js file and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename (or delete) the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in the current Firefox release. You can get to the profile folder below:
- Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory > Show Folder
or
- Go to about:support and click Show Folder next to Profile Directory.
Additional comment: This is just me but I'm always suspicious about McAfee stuff. Can you remove that and see if this alleviates the issue?
I disabled McAfee, problem persisted. There was no remove option.
Yes it works fine in safe-mode as long as I don't try to reset the browser. But when I go to re-enable add-ons one by one I can't, there is no option for that.
I deleted the User.JS and Prefs.JS files. I just got a crash after that, too.
Thanks again for looking into this.
Is your add-ons greyed out similar to this whilst in Safe Mode?
Yes, that is what I'm seeing.
This can be caused if one of the files that stores details of installed extensions is corrupt.
- Open your profile folder, for details of how to find it see https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Profiles
- Close Firefox
- Delete the following files if they exist (from your profile folder)
- extensions.cache
- extensions.rdf
- extensions.ini
- extensions.sqlite
- Re-start Firefox, it will then rebuild the list on installed extensions
Once you do that, try to re-enable your add-ons one by one in Safe Mode to see if your extensions are causing the issue.

- / I deleted all of the files that started with extensions and it still shows the same way, I can't enable them one by one.
Is there no way to wipe everything about Firefox from my computer and start all over? I really would hate to lose all my bookmarks and stuff but I am having so much trouble getting anywhere else.
You can reset Firefox but I doubt that'll do anything. If anything, I'm probably missing a step and also because it's late here. (almost 4am) therefore I'm not thinking of anything.
I'll come back to this thread when I have the chance tomorrow and follow up with you. In the meantime, I've escalated this thread to be looked over by the professional SUMO HelpDesk support team to see if they can provide any additional information i can't see in the crash reports. You should receive a reply in the next 24-72 hours. Keep in mind other contributors will offer solutions as well so be sure to take their advice as well. :)
Did you try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox?
- Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"
It managed not to crash for long enough to uncheck that box (hardware acceleration" but unfortunately crashed right after changing that setting. :(
Thinking out loud* Hardware acceleration is where the first couple of crashes came from. D2d windows 7 1..
Did you update the graphics cards with cor-el's post after the most recent crash?
You can use one of these to start Firefox in Safe Mode:
- On Windows, hold down the Shift key while starting Firefox with a double-click on the Firefox desktop shortcut
- On Mac, hold down the Options key while starting Firefox
- Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
In Firefox Safe mode these changes are effective:
- all extensions are disabled (about:addons)
- default theme is used (no persona)
- userChrome.css and userContent.css are ignored (chrome folder)
- default toolbar layout is used (localstore-safe.rdf file)
- JavaScript JIT compilers are disabled (prefs: javascript.options.*jit)
- hardware acceleration is disabled (Options > Advanced > General)
- plugins are not affected
- preferences are not affected

It's getting worse with every log in.
Hi Mengnu
You appear to have a problem with the Flash plugin.
You can check for problems with current Shockwave Flash plugin versions and try this:
- check for updates for your graphics drive drivers
https://support.mozilla.org/kb/upgrade-graphics-drivers-use-hardware-acceleration - disable protected mode in the Flash plugin (Flash 11.3+ on Windows Vista and later)
- disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin
