Thubderbird will not open - because of an attachment?

severn2002

I received a message with a password-protected attachment, and opened it in Thunderbird (in Windows 11).

I found that the password I'd been sent did not work with the attachment. I inadvertently closed the Thunderbird app with the password prompt still open.

When I tried to open Thunderbird again it tried to load the attachment and then just hangs indefinitely. Using safe mode has the same result.

Please can you suggest a solution?

Thanks

This is a stab in the dark, but when you open an attachment, Thunderbird actually saves a copy of the attachment in the operating system's temporary files location, then opens THAT. In Windows, the default temporary files folder is "C:\Users\(your account)\AppData\Local\Temp"; Thunderbird may create a sub-folder there for the attachment copy. But if, while Thunderbird is closed, you can locate that temporary file and delete it, maybe the symptom will go away.

Chosen Solution

Thank you, I couldn't find an attachment file at the location you mentioned though.

I finally solved the problem by renaming the session.json file, so that Thunderbird forgot the messages that were open when it was closed.

Good thinking!
