Firefox constantly needs to sign in to sync

I've had Firefox for 3 years and no problems. In the past 4 months 8 or 10 times it's lost its Sync and I have to sign in again and it makes me lose my saved passwords on some other sites that I frequently log in to. This has happened twice in the past 5 days.

I'm an older woman who does not mess around with my computer settings. I am not deleting my history, clearing my cache, erasing my cookies or any of these other things that people try to suggest I've done to make me lose my Firefox log in.

It's mostly annoying trying to remember my passwords to log in again like Twitter is the biggest issue. Plus one of my banking sites. Other websites like Yahoo my log in is there.

How can I stop Firefox from randomly logging out of this sync thing? Really I'm thinking about going back to Internet Explorer.

Thanks for any help.

In the event that the passwords information is lost, you should record all information in a separate text file somewhere else on your hard drive, or written down. You can easily copy and paste if you need to do so. If you are concerned about someone else looking at that file, you can compress it using a password.

Note: Windows users should download the ActiveX for Internet Explorer. and the plugin for Plugin-based browsers (like Firefox).

Note: Windows 8 and Windows 10 have built-in flash players and Adobe will cause a conflict. Install the plugin only. Not the ActiveX.

You're logged in status is kept in special cookies in your Firefox profile. If those cookies are removed, you would be logged out.

Profile data can be removed or not recorded several ways;

  • 1) Running Firefox in Private Mode (nothing is recorded)
  • 2) Privacy settings; (In the address bar, type about:preferences#privacy<enter>)
  • 3) Many disk cleaners and anti-virus type programs can remove data from browsers. Open their settings and have them leave the browsers alone.
  • 4) Mal-ware.

Type about:preferences#privacy<enter> in the address bar. The button next to History, select Use Custom Settings.

Turn on Remember My Browsing And Download History At the bottom of the page, turn on Clear History When Firefox Closes. At the far right, press the Settings button. Turn on ONLY Cache and Form And Search History leaving the others off.

Sync stores its login data in the Firefox Password Manager under "chrome://FirefoxAccounts" (no relation with Google Chrome). If this entry gets removed then you need to sign in again to Sync. You mention that you lose other passwords and thus the Firefox Sync account password appears to be affected as well. If you would keep some passwords and lose others then either the logins.json file gets replaced by an older copy or the file gets corrupted in a way that some passwords get lost (probably passwords stored after the corrupted password).

Are you running any cleanup software that might be causing this?

If you do use such software then best is to exclude the Firefox profile folder.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.
