When I try to log on to hotmail, I get a message to update my browser, which I have done, but can't get rid of the message.

Then read Update Firefox to the latest release to ensure you are on Firefox 28.0

Firefox 29.0 has been released to the update servers, so using About Firefox > Check for Updates will do an update to Firefox 29.0 not 28.0.
