When using Firefox with Facebook, the minute Facebook autofills when typing and the drop down menu appears, I get the "not responding" message and the freezing

Each time Facebook pull down menu autofill function is activated (i.e. say the word 'Chrysler' or a friend named 'Lisa' is typed in the construction of a post, all the Facebook pages with 'Chrysler' in the title or friends with the name 'Lisa' appear in a pull down menu) is activated Firefox freezes. It doesn't do it at any other time.

Use these steps to remove saved (form) data from a drop-down list:

  1. click the (empty) input field on the web page to open the drop-down list
  2. highlight an entry in the drop-down list
  3. press the Delete key (on Mac: Shift+Delete) to remove it.

When I click on an empty input field no drop down list appears. I went to the link you provided and there it also said click on the down arrow key and it will open up the drop-down so I tried that, it also did not open up the drop downs.

When this occurs, I have the freeze occur at the exact same time the drop down list appears so there is no opportunity to click or highlight or do anything once that happens.

It never resolves. I can wait 20 minutes and it is still not responding. This only happens on my PC at work, not my Mac at home.

Thanks!

Does it the drop-down list open if you type the first letter(s)?

I just tested it with a deliberate post that I knew would reveal the drop down right away, I typed in @Scott (on a friend named Scott's post) in a Comment, and the drop down showed me all the Scott autofill matches, no problem. Then I typed in just Scott and it showed the drop down but then immediately froze...?

But there are other instances where I have written paragraphs of text, any number of words should have drawn a drop down but they didn't, then suddenly I'll type a word and the drop down and freezing occurs.

It appears entirely random but I just don't think that's how these things work.

Very frustrating.

Try to rename (or delete) the formhistory.sqlite file in the Firefox profile folder.

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

I cannot locate that file. When I do a search of formhistory.sqlite no results are returned either.

I open the 'Mozilla firefox' folder and see a bunch of individual files and a series of subfolders none of which contain or are formhistory.sqlite.

I see, browser, defaults, dictionaries, jsloader, metro, modules, plugins, tileresources, uninstall and webapprt...?

Did you click the Show Folder button on the Help > Troubleshooting Information page?

Mine does it too. I type in my status and it autofills at random and firefox quits responding and will not respond forever until it is closed and you lose what you have typed. Grrr.

I have the same problem, too. There is no telling what you might type that will bring on this problem with the autofill window trying to open. I have Firefox 28.0 on Windows 7. I have had to go to Google Chrome to get around the problem. Adobe Flash is often freezing (but not permanently). I turned Adobe Flash extension off, but that did not solve my problem with Facebook.

I had not noticed this problem with Firefox and Facebook until today, March 31, 2014.

I have further noticed that when the auto complete box opens in the middle of the window, there is no problem. I think it happens when the auto complete box tries to open at the bottom so that the window would have to scroll to be able to see the box.

I just tried Firefox in safe mode, and the problem goes away. The trouble is that I have so many add-ons, I don't know how to narrow it down. When I say that Google Chrome works, that may be because I hardly ever use it and thus have no add-ons.

Based on my finding above on the relation to where in the window the autofill box opens, I tried that experiment in safe-mode.

If my facebook comment is at the very last line in the window and I type in something that would bring up the autofill box, then the autofill box does not try to open. If I scroll my comment up and then type in the very same thing that should have brought up the Autofill box, then the autofill box opens with no problem.

In most cases I have to type 2 or 3 letters, for example the word "vendor" I type ven and the drop down will appear with a bunch of suggestions and the screen freezes and I cannot do anything else except close the browser and restart it.
