It doesn't work on mozilla, youtube, reddit, my favorite IP Board (forum), but it works on gmail and 4chan.

My right click menu's Check Spelling check box is checked on every website.

Edit > Preferences > Advanced : General: Browsing: "Check my spelling as I type"

You can look here for dictionaries:

Right-click a web form on any web page.

Languages > Add Dictionaries

  • Install the Language pack

Read again Jay as the OP says it works in some places so it would not be a issue of not having a dictionary.

Try this.

Type about:config in the location (address) bar.
Filter for layout.spellcheckDefault
double-left-click or right-click and Modify value from 1 to 2 (two)

There have been problems reported with the Reddit Enhancement Suite 4.2.0.2 extension.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window or otherwise make changes.

I went to: Right click -> Languages -> English (United States) / Add dictionaries...

On the websites where spell check doesn't work, no dictionary is marked. I didn't choose for it to be that way. How do I enable it on every page by default?

Did you try Safe Mode?

I have my own question thread about this same problem. But have had no response in 10 days there! I have tried safe mode, with the default theme too. Deleted cache and that sites cookies etc. Nothing has helped.

Today I saw your tip to edit in about:config and tried that. Closed and then restarted Firefox and still no change. The strangest thing is that on the one site I am having problems with I still have the ability to spell check the subject of a group post, just not the group post itself. Also cannot spell check that sites personal messages in their internal messaging system. This is a real headscratcher. I now have 3 dictionaries, US, Canadian and UK English added and still no option to enable spell check. All I see with a right click in the text I have typed is the option to install yet another dictionary.

Everyone who updates to FF 24 is having the same problem on that site. Spell check used to have to be enabled by right clicking and selecting spell check even though check my typing as I type was checked in the settings.

Current Firefox versions hide Check Spelling in the right-click context menu of a text area if the web page disables the spelling check via a spellcheck="false" attribute of this element.

You can right-click in the text editor area and use "Inspect Element" to see if this text area has a spellcheck="false" attribute.

Removing this spellcheck="false" attribute by selecting it via a double-click and using the Delete or Backspace key should make the Check Spelling item in the right-click context menu reappear.

Well I see how this is not a bug, is working as designed. But why? Why would anyone want to disable a persons choice to use a spell checker or not? I have two choices, 1. Use Inspect element to edit the web page each and every post, 2. create my text in another editor and then copy and paste into the web page I am entering. Neither is satisfactory. So my question is: Is there a way to change a parameter in about:config etc. to override this situation? Or some other permanent solution? As a user I should have a choice to use spell checker. Now not only my post is foolish, but its doubly foolish because I can't spell.
