I don't want to go to the library every time I want to add or create a new folder in the pull down bookmark within Firefox. This does not happen in my xp computers, only in my new win 7(of which I am getting very tired of dealing with)

How do you add a new folder on Windows XP that isn't working on Windows 7?

If you have the different menus -- orange Firefox button vs. full menu bar -- on the two systems, you can easily switch that.

Alt+v (opens the classic View menu) > Toolbars > Menu Bar

Even if the full menu bar is not showing, you can have a bookmarks menu on the bookmarks toolbar. If it is not there, there is a button in the toolbar customize window you can use to get it on there. If you really do not want to have to open the bookmarks window, you could use the sidebar. You can add folders and edit bookmarks in the sidebar. Ctrl-B is the keyboard shortcut used to open the bookmarks sidebar.

You should be able to add a new folder via the right-click context menu.
That should work in the Bookmarks menu and on the Bookmarks Toolbar and the Bookmarks sidebar (Ctrl+B).

If that isn't working then you may have an extension that is interfering.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

that was somewhat helpful. If I right click and select "new folder" I can add one but, another problem appears, my bookmarks pull down has a duplicate listing below the first. Only the second shows the added folder. Why do I see two listings of bookmarks?

Did you ever import an HTML backup?

Can you delete that duplicate folder?

If you have accidentally removed bookmarks then use "Organize > Undo" in the bookmarks manager (Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks) to get them back.
The Organize button is the first of the three buttons next to the Back and Forward buttons on the toolbar in the Library (Bookmarks Manager).
That only works if you haven't closed Firefox.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox Profile Folder.
