I have been having sporadic problems with not being able to type in Firefox when I could type everywhere else. As of this afternoon it is happening on all three of my computers. I have done all the usual Googling. I am not inclined to reinstall on all three computers particularly since it rarely solves the problem.

I'm using Chrome to post this message.

All three computers use Windows 7. One is a laptop i5 with 8GB RAM. One is a 4 year old QuadCore with 8GB RAM. One is a brand new i7 with 32 GB RAM.

What can I try that has a real chance of success?

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

Why would I suddenly have to do this on three different computers? I don't like the idea that I'm going to lose some of my preferences on all three machines. What causes this to be necessary?
