The computer freezes when I'm saving pics on Firefox and I can't find the download.rdf file and delete it to prevent this

The entire computer freezes when I'm downloading pics. It started just the other day. After a google search, I found out I had to locate the download.rdf file and delete it BUT i can't find it anywhere. I have chosen to show all hidden files and folders (which was tricky as hell in Windows 7) but it doesn't show and not even the computer can't find it.

I have rebooted the computer almost 10 times yesterday evening and tonight and I'm so sick of it. It's such a basic thing that should work without a hassle!?!?

This file, called downloads.rdf is located on your profile folder. That is C:\Users\{USERNAME}\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\profile\{ID}\

If you don't have any other profile {ID} should be the only folder with numbers and letters. Remember to disable hidden files and folders from Explorer.

If this doesn't work try to reset Firefox.

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

If that didn't work too, please fully uninstall Firefox and remove your profile completely"

Forget about "downloads.rdf" for Firefox 14; your download data is now stored in SQLite database files.

Try the steps in this article: What to do if you can't download or save files.

jscher2000, none of those steps are really helpful. The only thing concerning my issues was 'Reset the download folder', I did but everything still froze and I had to restart the computer. Again. Firefox should have kept the rdf file so I could have deleted it and had the problem solved by now!

marcsanses, thanks for the guide to find the profile folder but like i said, i couldn't find it because it wasn't there. So i suppose the only thing left to do is reset Firefox and lose everything!?!? Might as well just uninstall and use Chrome!

Hi Jedwood, can you describe the steps you're using to download pictures and list a site or two that has the problem? For example, if you right-click the thumbnail picture to the left of this post and Save Image As, is there any problem with that?

In your original post you did not include any system information. I'm going to assume you have a recent Flash player. In case the problem is related to a Flash-powered downloader, could you try disabling the new protected mode in Flash 11.3, since that feature is currently being debugged. See this support article from Adobe under the heading "Last Resort": Adobe Forums: How do I troubleshoot Flash Player's protected mode for Firefox?

You mean you skipped all the other steps? I suggest taking them in order, since they start from the most widely applicable and commonly successful solutions.

Right-click, save as. Has happened on tumblr and twitpic. 2 or 3 pics works fine, then all of a sudden when I've clicked save on another pic, everything freezes. I'm not so computer savvy, I just filled in what I knew. Updated the flash last week, i think. Can you dumb down the flash thing for me, please? :( don't think i'm completely certain of what to do. :/

"You mean you skipped all the other steps? I suggest taking them in order, since they start from the most widely applicable and commonly successful solutions." I always have a clear list, so I didn't need to focus on step 1. Step 2, changing the download destination. I'm saving to the Pictures folder. Don't have a lot of faith that it will make any difference if i create a new folder and save things to there but i can try. But i already sense a new reboot coming up even if i do. Step 3 was reseting the download folder that i went for. thanks for trying to help me, by the way! much appreciated!! :)

eta; went to do step 2 but according to firefox, default download folder is desktop but all images still go in the folder i last used; Pictures.

If the problem occurs with right-click and Save Image As, then I don't think it's a Flash problem.

Could you try two more things:

(1) Disable integrated antivirus scanning (seventh item in the article). By default, Firefox submits all downloads to your antivirus software and marks them as internet downloads. To turn that off, see the steps in this section:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/cant-download-or-save-files#w_disable-virus-scanning-in-firefox-preferences

(2) As suggested earlier, you could try the Reset feature. This duplicates certain key data from your active settings folder into a new one, bypassing some add-ons and custom settings. Your plugins will still be active, but extensions would need to be reinstalled.

More information in this article: Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings.

If the new settings folder has the same problem, you can switch back if you like using Firefox's Profile Manager. (This article describes how to start Firefox in the profile manager. I do not recommend removing anything until you are 110% certain that you will never need any of that profile's data in the future. Profile Manager - Create, remove or switch Firefox profiles)

Does it make any difference?

Current Firefox versions remember the download directory based upon the URL, so if the URL changes then the default folder may be chosen if there hasn't been selected a download folder before for that server.
You can disable this feature to remember the download directory via the Boolean pref browser.download.lastDir.savePerSite on the about:config page.
The browser.download.lastDir.savePerSite pref doesn't exist by default (it is a hidden pref), so you need to create it.
Create a new Boolean pref with the name browser.download.lastDir.savePerSite and set the value to false.

You may have to clear the "Site Preferences" via Clear Recent History to remove already stored data.

It is possible that your anti-virus software is corrupting the downloaded files or otherwise interfering with downloading and saving files. Try to disable the real-time (live) scanning of files in your anti-virus software temporarily to see if that makes downloading work.

Sorry for the really late reply!!! Had a computer problem, it kept rebooting and I was about to lose my mind, but everything seems to work fine now. I can even save pics via Firefox without everything freezing and needs to be restarted, which is weird because I haven't done anything more than previously stated. :/ I have no idea what it was all about; I've regularly scanned for virus and malware but everything's clean. Let's hope this will last or I'll have to come back here. :D

Thanks alot for all the help!!!!
