Real Player Browser Download Plugin button in Firefox 10 stopped appearing on videos.


The Real Player Browser Download Record Plugin 15.0.1 in Firefox 10 stopped appearing on all videos. It was working from 1/31 to 2/3 and now doesn't show at all. A clean reinstall of Real Player 15 Plus doesn't fix this. OS is Windows 7 Home Premium. As usual after a F.F. upgrade, the download button works on Internet Explorer. Now it's the weekend and Real's Developers aren't even working! The Developers of both companies need to coordinate this once and for all. Norton started doing this with Mozilla at my suggestion for the Norton Tool Bar and there no longer is any delay in compatibility. Please contact Real Player tech support to complain. Their Case Manager told me that the three week compatibility delay with Real Player 14 last year would never happen again. I wouldn't bet on it.

Hey, guys. I have good news on the RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin compatibility with Firefox 10.0. It's fixed, as of two days ago but tech support wasn't informed properly. Yesterday, 2/8 I tried to check for updates and there was one and it fixed the compatibility problem. Here's what to do. Click on the RealPlayer button in the upper left corner of RealPlayer and on the menu that opens, click on "Check for Updates". You should see an update checked for the same "15.0" but when you run the update it should say it's now reading "15.0.2". If the download button still doesn't appear, I think I had to then open the Firefox Addons folder, click on "extensions"and enable the Plugin extension by simply clicking the "enable" button which should now be available. Then just restart Firefox and it should work. Let me know if you're still having any problem with it.

The Download button doesn't show on any videos. It was working since 1/31 until 2/3 and then stopped appearing. Reinstalling RealPlayer does nothing. Works on IE 8, as usual.

Great! Glad it's OK now. I've gone through the same headaches. Interesting problem but at least you figured it out and were able to correct it. Taking the long way around at least gets you there and then you learn for the next time. One major complaint I've reported many times to RealPlayer is that when this compatibility upgrade (usually there's no actual upgrade of the player, they just make the Plugin compatible with Firefox's upgrade and all you can do is complain and wait until they do it), but either way their Developers don't post any information on their site and even tech support never gets properly informed as to what's happening and when it will be made compatible, so it's not at all surprising that so many people were having problems. I went through every single one of these confusions myself in the past. By the way, just to be sure you know for the next time, the Download button Will appear using Internet Explorer for the same site and video, because it's only the Plugin extension in Firefox that is now a compatibility issue after an upgrade of Firefox to a new version, so RealPlayer still will work normally with Internet Explorer until the issue is fixed.

You're using the current version. I had a conflict because I had installed Real Video Downloader -- I fixed the problem by deleting that program (I used Revo Uninstaller [free version] to do it), and then re-installed Real Player (free version).

You've got the right updated version, but you don't say whether you followed my instruction to enable the RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin after getting the update. In Firefox, click on Tools, then Addons, then Extensions , and find the RealPlayer Record Plugin which should now be showing a button on the right saying "Enable". Click on it and it should now read "disable". Restart Firefox and it should be working. If this doesn't work, or if it's still reading "Incompatible" with no Enable button showing, then try calling tech support to report a bug at 1(866) 688-2077. They generally don't have tech support for the free version but for something like this they'll talk to you.

Yes...I uninstalled Real Downloader and Real Player...then re-installed only Real Player (the current version) and checked the Add-Ons Extensions and everything was exactly as I was told it would be...and the download function now works.

I think the problem was a conflict with Real Downloader, and then making sure I had the current version of Real Player,

I am surprised that there are not more complaints here about the Firefox update that once again disables realdownloader as well as other plug ins. Why is it taking so long for a solution and why didn't Firefox warn us about this beforehand or at the very least give us a chance to delay the update until it was compatible.Bad customer service equals bad business in my book.

now Firefox is doing the dictating I got an email telling me that they will no longer enable real player and are disabling everyone's. I say bull crap I will switch to chrome or any other browser that doesn't have the audacity to pick and choose my plug ins.

@mamabrumble59 Hi, Gotta clarify this a bit. First of all, Firefox is not disabling RealPlayer. It's the RealPlayer Record plugin extension (in the Add-ons Manager under Extensions). Second, the Block is in the form of a pop up advising you to disable it ( at least as of several hours ago). Third, there is still the option to enable it from the Add-ons Manager. Firefox is doing this because some users have had problems with the Adobe Flash update to 11.3 apparently caused by the extension. I talked RealPlayer's Case Manager and their Developers are working on this,but I will tell you I've tested it and it's NOT the cause of the bugs in the Flash update,although it seems to be part of the problem for some users RealPlayer is not getting a lot of complaints. One bug is that no video content plays at all. That's what I and many others have found, but I don't think the extension is the main problem at all. Other problems are crashes,etc. So there's no need to give up on Firefox. In the meantime you can go to Adobe's site where there is a link to reinstall the previous version of Adobe Flash, either 11.2 (with known vulnerabilities,but with good security software you should be OK) or 10.3 which is up to date on security but not on new features. I did that and everything is working fine - including RealPlayer. I tested the "Block" with the 11.3 update installed and I got the pop up - it did NOT disable the Record plugin extension automatically, but even if it does, I just reviewed the Blocklist again and it clearly says you can enable it. However, RealPlayer's CM said they've had a few complaints that users can't re-enable the extension, but the Developers are working on that And if you haven't done the update yet you should be fine - just wait and let the Developers fight it out. If you need a link to the Adobe's reinstall the earlier version page, let me know. The real problem here, I'm convinced are multiple serious bugs in that Flash update, very possibly involving different conflicts for different users. Adobe is working on this, but they're also passing the buck, but the complaints are mushrooming and both they and Firefox's Developers will have to find a fix. So just sit tight. Hope this helps.

I had Firefox 13 in with Realplayer 15 installed and working. As of 6/15/12 I had to uninstall Realplayer 15 because with it in, not a single video would play on any site using Firefox 4 thru 13. I tried all the disabling of plugins and the still not a single video would play. Some didn't even show up on the page. Youtube gave me a black video screen with an error message and said try again later. When I switched over to IE it all worked fine. I got sick of all the try this and try that crap!!!! Quit using the Microsoft style mind boggling run around solutions that never work. Straighten this out Mozilla.org or your going to loose a lot of users and I don't think that will make the advertisers happy at all. I don't care much for IE but I'm not wasting any more time. If you don't want people using Realplayer on Firefox then just admit it. 6/17/12 Update: (1) I reinstalled RealPlayer 15 (2) To get videos to play in FF13, I had to disable the download and record option in Realplayer Preferences (uncheck the "Enable Download & Recording for Web Browsers box in Realplayer Preferences) To download record in IE you have to enable it temporarily . P.I.T.A!!! because when it's enabled no .flv video's play in Firefox 4 thru 13 and the RealPlayer download and record option does not work in Firefox 4 thru 13. I haven't tried the rollback Adobe Flash player to 10.3 but I will and update the post and give the old apps Flash player links . I think Checkmate is correct, the problem is the Adobe Flash Player 11 update that fouled things up. For now I'm using YouTube Downloader Free Edition from Cnet>> http://download.cnet.com/Free-YouTube-Downloader/3000-2071_4-75219434.html?tag=mncol;7 and leaving RealPlayer installed so I can retain the RealPlayer functions, files and library I have.

@grapmsx2 Hi, The problem is caused by bugs in the recent Adobe Flash update to 11.3 which only cause these problems with Firefox. I agree, Firefox's troubleshooting steps are useless because even though the RealPlayer Record plugin extension apparently is the cause for some users, I've tested it with the same symptoms you're having and it's NOT the cause. And even if it were, it's not a fix or even an adequate workaround. All you have to do is revert back to the earlier version of Adobe Flash plugin 10.3 which is up to date on security ( the 11.2 has vulnerabilities). I did this before Adobe recommended it as a last resort and everything works just fine - videos play and download using Firefox. There's a link to the 10.3 on Adobe's page about this 11.3 update problem. Also, FF is either giving a pop up recommending disabling the RealPlayer Record plugin extension or disabling it automatically on an upgrade. But either way, you can re-enable it. I you can't, call RealPlayer to let them know. Firefox and Adobe's Developers are working on it.RealPlayer's recommendation is to revert back to Adobe Flash version 10.3.

thank you chekmate I assumed the blacked out video was because ff wanted to strong arm my disabling the downloader, when i disable the downloader I am able to watch a video when I reenable the downloader my video's are blacked out....this was why I assumed so, your recomendations sound like the best solution for me and I am extreamly thankfull you replied/ Laura, a very new computer operator

It's interesting that you and I had the exact same symptoms and after disabling the downloader you could watch videos again but when I disabled it it made no difference. There do seem to be multiple causes or conflicts here for different users, but all still having to do with that Adobe Flash update 11.3 - and other users, as I said are having crashes,etc. There are other, more advanced troubleshooting steps like disabling a new Protected Mode feature but that reduces security and it involves some confusing instructions to do, so it's not the best solution even though FF and Adobe mention it. But I'm really curious what you actually do to resolve this as a workaround till it's fixed - revert back to the earlier version of Adobe Flash or simply disable the downloader? Just in case you don't know, if you just disable the downloader, you can still download videos with Internet Explorer and the RealPlayer download button, because it's only in FF that the Flash update is causing problems. Here's the link to download and install the 10.3 version of Flash Player for FF. But first you need to uninstall the 11.3 version of Flash Player if it's installed, from the control panel. I'll show you how to do that but first read my next post if you need it.

Then look for the 10.3 version which is highlighted and click on it. On the page that appears, look for where it says Windows choices and click on "Flash Player 10.3 version for other browsers". With this solution, as I said, you'll be able to use the downloader with Firefox, and the 10.3 version is also up to date on security. Let me know how it went. You're getting a valuable lesson early on about how routine updates can sometimes cause ridiculous conflicts.

I do agree with everything you are saying checkmate except it is Firefox who is not disabling my realdownloader it totally no longer works. They are saying this is a security issue which is bull, real player down-loader has had this issue every time ff upgrades, why? Is it really that difficult to correspond with the add ons and extensions your company knows are popular. I just really feel that ff is turning a huge customer base against them. Chrome is nearly just as fast as ff now and internet explorer has been stepping up security issues and advertising problems.For two straight weeks ff worked better and faster then it ever had since I began using them, with my realdownloader working as well. Now they just had to upgrade and get everyone all upset because nothing works , why? Is it that hard to make upgrades optional until the plug ins work, I think not, bad business and bad customer relations. As for Thank you my friend because your instructions have me up and running for now. I have bookmarked this page and if you don't mind I would love to learn a few things from you as you instruct others, thank you Laura

Just know there are hundreds of people on these forums complaining about these issues after the Adobe Flash Plugin update for FF and many also calling RealPlayer also. You don't see them only because this isn't the main thread for this particular issue. But don't confuse this issue with the frequent compatibility problem until RealPlayer updates the downloader after a FF upgrade. This time everything was fine until the Adobe Flash plugin update for FF. First, tell me what's not working. FF says Add-ons are disabled because or either a security OR a stability issue. In this case, it's a stability issue.You say the downloader is "totally not working". Do you mean you can't watch videos at all or just that you can't download them because the downloader is disabled. You said last time that with it disabled, you could see videos.To check if it's disabled, Click on Tools , then Add-ons, then Extensions, and find the RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin and tell me EXACTLY what it says. Especially, tell me what it reads on the right. Does it say the word "enable" or "disable". Also, we have to check what version of the Adobe Flash Player is installed. Click on the Start button ( the globe on the lower left of the screen). Then in the search box, type "control panel". Click on the "control panel" now showing at the top. Then when it opens, find Programs, and click on 'uninstall programs' under it. On the list of programs, look for Adobe Flash Player Plugin and look on the right for the exact version number ( the column on the right) and tell me what it is. Then close the window - we're not uninstalling anything, just seeing the version number. Tell me what you did. You say my instructions got you up and running for now, but you also said the downloader is "totally not working". I also mentioned a couple of choices of what you could do, so what exactly did you do that got you "up and running"? FF needs this info which I can relay to a moderator on an advanced forum I'm on. This can help other users as well. So let's take this one step at a time. You're right about one thing, though - this should NOT be happening. Get back to me with the info.

@grampsx2 You're on the right track with everything, and yeah, it's a P.I.T.A. to have to disable it in FF and enable it in IE. But I have to say it's darn funny the way you put it. And using the YouTube Downloader certainly was a good idea until there's a fix. If you try rolling back the Adobe update to 10.3, just remember go to the uninstall programs list to uninstall the 11.3 first Flash Player Plugin first and restart.
