Firefox performance SO SLOW on my Mac OS X 10.6 / Macbook Pro 2.4 Ghz / cable biz-class internet connection compared to other browsers

Chrome works perfectly. Safari works perfectly. But Firefox 7 is WAY TOO SLOW - approx 1 minute+ to get from one website to another. With the other browsers, approx 1 second. All Firefox plug-ins turned off. Seems broken or like something is running in the background. For a couple of years I've been using Firefox to develop websites, nothing like it, the best, but all of a sudden i cannot get it to work properly. please help.
