Chosen solution

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

See:

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Why are you not using Firefox 7?

more options

Frankly, because I dont feel like dealing with the the potential wrestling match between Firefox 7 and my addons and plugins right now. Also I occasionally use Firefox 5 & 6 and as silly as it sounds, I dont want to deal with looking for everything in a new place or using new features right now. Change is not good! I know that sounds terribly antiquated in light of the break neck pace of tech evolution and the fact that the moment something comes out of the box it is obsolete but I have enough 'hobbies' with getting up to speed with my new Android phone and integrating a Server 2008 R2 SP1 RDS license server into a 2003 domain and rebuilding the license database. 3.6 (22) works, doesnt throw hissy fits and I can find what I need without getting side tracked because my addon toolbar has just sucked the pipe. I'll be using 7 when 10 is released which should be next week at this rate. Not that Im complaining.

Can I roll it back or not? 8)

Seems NetLimiter 3 was causing the problem. I installed it the same day of the update, duh. Thank you.
