Firefox has suddenly stopped opening "in a new window" when I ask it to - will open "in new tab" only

For the last couple of days, Firefox has suddenly stopped opening in a new window; I can now only ever have one window open at a time (though it still lets me open multiple tabs). Tried closing everything down and rebooting of course, but makes no difference. Am not aware of having changed any settings - have I changed or corrupted something without realising it? The only new thing I have done lately is download the EPUB reader add-on! Could there be a connection?

Many thanks for any suggestions

Chosen solution

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

  • Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

See:

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.

  • Use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window to disable all extensions.
  • Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

Thank you very much. We tried this - not exactly as per your suggestion, I admit; we started by disabling the most recent (the only recently added) add-on, which was EPUB reader. Firefox immediately started behaving normally again. For the moment, the solution seems to be to leave EPUB reader disabled except when specifically needed - perhaps there is some slight incompatibility there which is yet to be resolved.

Thank you for your help!

Hello Casey, I'm the developer of the EPUBReader add-on and found your posting by chance.

It's very likely, that your problems are caused by a conflict between the Zone Alarm Toolbar Add-on and EPUBReader. It seems to be, that the Zone Alarm add-on causes conflicts with many different add-ons as you can read here .

Another user who had exactly the same problem could solve it by contacting the Zone alarm support and installation a new version of Zone Alarm.

Thank you very much for your answer, epubreader! I'll check - I'm not sure, but I think I may have updated ZoneAlarm since then.
