Gmail, and Gmail only, complains that FF 53, 56 are not up-to-date browsers and will only show Basic HTML for Gmail.

Beginning with some Firefox 5x version (52 or 53?) and now on 56 on Windows 7, I cannot Gmail to display correctly. It says that I need an u-to-date browser and reverts to the basic HTML version, which lacks features I depend upon. Gmail works fine in IE and Opera. So I know it is a Firefox problem. Even if I click the button to get an up-to-date browse and install FF 56r, I still get this problem. What can I do? Thanks.

Hi drduncan, Thank you very much for your question. I understand that Gmail, when visited in Firefox, gives the html version of Firefox.

This does not happen for me. When my email loads, I see 'Loading Standard Version' and a link to the HTML version.

In order to change it back, I would recommend clearing the cache. Clear your cache without clearing your browsing history or deleting the cookies for gmail.com

Did that help?

Thanks. Unfortunately, that did not help. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages:

You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
  • press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)

Clear the cache and remove the cookies from websites that cause problems via the "3-bar" Firefox menu button (Options/Preferences).

"Clear the cache:

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security -> Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove the cookies" from websites that cause problems.

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security -> "Use custom settings for history" -> Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window
