I refreshed my Firefox, now how do I get my bookmarks back? Also my google search no longer works?

Chosen solution

Could you look up your Firefox version number on the Troubleshooting Information page. Either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, is your version 55.0, 55.0.1, or 55.0.2? If do not have 55.0.2 -- a bug fix released today -- you may benefit from updating. Please see: Update Firefox to the latest release.

In case you only need to redisplay your Bookmarks Toolbar, you can do that using any of these:

To turn on the Bookmarks Toolbar, Menu Bar, or other bars, click it on the list.

If your Bookmarks Toolbar doesn't have your bookmarks, just the standard ones that come with Firefox, are all your bookmarks missing from the "Library" window? You can check that using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+b
  • Bookmarks > "Show All Bookmarks"

The left column should show categories for Bookmarks Menu, Bookmarks Toolbar, and Other Bookmarks. (Sync users may also have Mobile Bookmarks.) Anything there?

If all of the bookmarks are missing, it might be necessary to rescue some files from your old profile folder. That should be on your Windows desktop now after the Refresh, inside a folder named Old Firefox Data.

Can you find that folder and double-click into it, then double-click into the semi-randomly-named profile folder inside and look for a folder named bookmarkbackups. The files in there should have recent dates in their names.

Do you see any files you would like to try to restore to your Firefox? This article has the steps: Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer. You'll need to use the Choose File option and then direct Firefox to look on your desktop, Old Firefox Data, etc.

Any progress so far?

You might need to reselect your default search engine. This article will get you to the key part of the Options page: Change your default search settings in Firefox.

My default is set to google, but when you click on it nothing happens. I tried your instructions for the bookmarks, and it says; unable to process the backup file. Now what?
