My Thunderbird installation on a Win7 machine doesn't let me convert an email into a task anymore or very inconsistently only once in a while with every other email. I'v found someone with a similar problem but no solution yet (this thread: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1162542). It's a crucial part of my everyday work with Thunderbird and it would be awesome to have it fixed soon!

well that link does not work....

What other add-on other than lightning do you have installed? It works for me. So the reasons are really limited to the availability of a non write protected calendar/Task list and an add-on that interferes with the creation process.

strangely the link works for me in different browsers and different computers. EDIT: I found the problem. Your browser might use the last bracket as part of the link. Here it is again:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1162542

my addons would be:

  • AttachmentExtractor
  • AutoCopy 2 (deactivated as of now)
  • Inverse SOGo Connector
  • Lightning
  • Manually Sort Folders
  • ThunderBirthDay
  • XNote++

The strange thing is that there appears to be no consistency regarding the behavior of the bug. With some emails it works fine. With others it doesn't. And I can't see a difference between the affected mails.
