I installed update 52.0 yesterday as requested, and now cannot print e-mails. Before the update everything worked perfectly.

My husband, who always dealt with this, recently died and as I am no spring chicken and not computer savvy, I'm struggling. I tried to sign in on the Thunderbird Contacts page but neither of the usernames or passwords I have notes of worked, and saying I'd lost either just produced a line telling me an e-mail had been sent to my e-mail address. Twice. But no e-mail has been received.

I just don't know what to do next.

Chosen solution

There's no need to dig into the Config. editor. I suggest you reread this page to find the easy workaround: change the paper size from Letter to A4.

well you managed to log in, so the missing emails must not be required now.

have you turned your computer off since the update? If not do so. Can you print from notepad? Please try it.

I don't have a notepad. I have switched off and on again. I can receive and send e-mails, but not print them off. When I first tried to contact Mozilla unsure of either username or password, Mozilla said, twice, "Confirmation e-mail sent successfully." Those are the e-mails I did not receive.

Trying to print produces the "Preparing to print" message but then sits there with the little blue circle going round and round for ever. Nothing ever happens - I've tried leaving it for over an hour but nothing changes.

One thing occurs to me: my late husband had Asperger's and couldn't stand Ads popping up and moving and flashing so he was very much into Ad blocking on his computer, and I'm wondering if he did something to mine, also, which is blocking something in the new update. Unfortunately, I know absolutely nothing about that side of things - I can "Google" and send an e-mail and that's my lot, I'm afraid I don't have a technical brain.

Then lets start with some basics.

Do you have a menu bar at the top of Thunderbird with file and edit etc? Can you print preview?

more options

I have the menu bar but can't print preview. If I try to, the box labelled 'Print preview' comes up, with 'Progress: preparing' but nothing further happens. If I cancel, the message becomes 'Print preview (Not responding)'. But cancel doesn't actually cancel, and the screen fades out to very pale.

If I click on the red 'x' in the top right corner the box changes to one labelled Thunderbird. Below, it says 'Thunderbird is not responding' and gives me two options: Close the Program, or Wait for the program to respond.

I've tried waiting an hour but with no response. Clicking on 'Close the program' results in a message saying 'Windows is checking for a solution to the problem' with a green line below that moves across the box. The box disappears and that's it.

You may be experiencing the printing bug in TB 52.

After reading the bug.

Use the config editor to search for print_paper_height change any entry that appears with a value other than -1.00 to -1.00 close the config editor and restart Thunderbird. Does the problem go away?

Sorry. sfhowes: I don't know what TB52 is, although I can understand the words printing bug.

Matt: Config Editor was so incomprehensible to me that I backed out because I truly wouldn't know what I was doing.

I think I'm either going to have to live with it, or try to find someone locally to come in and look at the problem. Being way past my three-score-and-ten, totally ignorant about the workings of computers, and not the sharpest tack in the box doesn't help.

Thank-you, both of you.

A friend advised me where to look in order to change from letter to A4. I did so and found it had been changed to letter, and I changed it back to A4.

It worked. Thank-you very much indeed.
