I've used FIREFOX for many years, but the latest version (47) is the most frustrating i've ever encountered. Adopting the Microsoft philosophy of "ONLY ONE PRODUCT FOR ALL DEVICES" was a BAAD!! mistake, Now, you go to any site and you get 3 to 5 pages of 2inch lines of MICETYPE before you actually get to what you asked for in the first place, I guess this is OK if your using a tiny cell phone while driving, (which seem to be the rule these days) Anyway, this is a real pain in the HEMORRHOIDS for desk-top users. Hasn't any smart programmer come up with an app that will convert the mostly unusable phone screens to regular desk-top displays.?

Hi fmierow, Sorry not sure I can help. I am not sure if you are asking for help with Firefox. Generally complaining about Firefox, or just unhappy about current website design.

Firefox on phones is a different product to the one used for desktop PCs. Many sites have designs optimised for both desktops and phones and you get the version appropriate to the device you are using.

This forum for instance has

Firefox also has a built in tool allowing you to see what a website ot webpage will look like in a different device/screen. Typically how asmart phone may see it, bur it also simulates different screen sizes and aspect ratios

I'm not seeing a lot of "mobile" sites in the desktop version of Firefox on Windows 7, so I suspect that what is affecting your Firefox isn't due to built-in settings.

You might have noticed that sites with a "responsive" layout may switch to a single-column design as you zoom in. The reasons is that Firefox reports a proportionally smaller available screen resolution when you zoom in. However, it sounds as though you are seeing very small type, which is the opposite of what you would expect in that situation.

General advice in case you haven't already tried it:

When you have a problem with sites that previously worked normally, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Clear Firefox's Cache

See: How to clear the Firefox cache

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes. If you do not see the number going down on the page, you can reload it using Ctrl+r to check progress.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:

  • right-click (on Mac Ctrl+click) a blank area of the page and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • (menu bar) Tools > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • click the padlock or "i" icon in the address bar, then the ">" button, then More Information, and finally the "View Cookies" button

In the dialog that opens, the current site should be pre-filled in the search box at the top of the dialog so you can remove that site's cookies individually.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

Could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? In Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement?

What is the content of the 3-5 pages of small type? For example, does it look like a deconstructed version of the site's top headers and menus, or something that simply doesn't belong, like pharma spam?

Click that and a cookie for msumo gets set and it supplies that format afterwards for all other threads that are viewed - gotta clear that cookie.

Just a warning to others who may be curious ...

Yes, john99's reply was useful. Responsive Design Mode allows me to view the mobile mode compatible web sites in something approximating the mobile=o mode, which really helps.

Glad the answer helped.

If you wish to give two or three examples of problem links that are public and not requiring a login we will be able to look at them. Also let us have a screenshot of at least one of the web pages so we know how you see them.

The Responsive Design View tool is not really expected to be used on a daily basis to view websites, Something is going wrong if you need to use that most of the time.
