FireFox 40.0 no longer supports onepassword 3 extention, missing libs

more options

Some libraries used by Onepassword 3 have apparently been removed since Firefox 39.03 and the one password widget has gone, forcing people to abandon software that worked well and now have to find an alternative, or go back to a older version of Firefox and stop upgrading?

It would be very nice to have these libraries back or at least tell us what they are so we can put them back manually ourselves.

It is disappointing to keep upgrading ...as advised to then find your favourite software apps no longer work and your stuck. There is no reason for this not to be backwards compatible.

Onepassword 4 trial works but not well as I have to run it before starting the browser otherwise I get a missing app message. I don't really want to pay for another password manager that doesn't add great value to the previous one nor correct fundamental flaws in the methodology of filling out passwords.

I'd just like to clarify that the issue here isn't the pending signing requirements in Firefox. That particular issue affects even our newer extension for 1Password 4/5 on Mac and Windows and we will be addressing it there. While there is a warning in Firefox 40 about signing, unsigned extensions are still allowed to run. Firefox 41 will have a hidden preference to allow unsigned extensions and Firefox 42 will ban their use completely. The issue here is the removal of libraries that our old extension relied on. With the removal of the widget module from Firefox the extension is broken at the code level.

I'm not familiar with this add-on, but here is their article on your options: https://support.1password.com/v3-extension-firefox/

If you are not interested in using a newer version right now, you might consider the Extended Support Release (ESR) which was developed for large businesses that can't tolerate frequent updates. The ESR release is based on Firefox 38 and will have security updates over the next several months but will not have too many feature changes. This will extend the life of your add-on as long as possible.

(As for modifying Firefox 40 by restoring the widget module, I don't think that's possible. The reason it was removed is in preparation for an upcoming release where tabs run in individual processes called e10s.)

Hi jscher2000, thanks for the reply.

If I wanted to I could go back and reinstall Firefox 39.03, which worked with the onepassword extension (3.920), however, I would be fixed at this release, or ESR 38, which is even further back. Surely if a commercial application like onepassword used libraries that have been removed then it likely applies to other add ons/ extensions thus rendering them defunct. You could still support both. Obviously software moves on and hopefully gets better but lack of backwards compatibility causes avoidable mayhem and cost. eg. Apple does this all the time, forcing you to buy new hardware and software on a regular basis...not everyone can afford this level of cycling and it is wasteful.

Hi Mog932, the ESR series is "behind" in features compared with the mainstream version, but it will get security updates for more than six months, so it is a reasonable option.

If you want to make a pitch for adding widget module compatibility back to Firefox, I'm afraid you'll have to talk to the Add-ons people. Here in support, we generally work with the Firefox(es) we have today.
