Something is opening new tabs and windows in Firefox and making them active. I suspect cookies. I tried the 2 ways to remove all cookies. They reappear. I have reset Firefox. I have cleared all cache. I have run scans from Zonealarm and PC Matic. So three questions. Is something in the registry causing this? Has anyone had this and know what caused it? How do I remove all cookies? Thanks for your time. Keith

I checked on extensions and found both

    lEssa2Paay 1.9 (im@s.edu)
   toPbuyer 4.1 (Sd@Coq.net)

I removed them and the popups seem to have stopped. So thank you for your advice. I will monitor closely. Keith 'I have added a copy of one of the scams that opened in new tabs.' (1) Windows Firefox Browser Warning:

Sounds like Malware.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Hi, Thanks for your time. MS Safety Scanner did not work . Error message msert.exe is not a valid win32 app. I downloaded and ran MalwareBytes Anti-Malware and Anti exploit as well as MS Security Essentials. Malware was highlighted. It was quarantined. I started Firefox. In the last 30 mins three new tabs were opened and made active. Each wanted to load cookies which I denied and then cancelled the tabs. The problem is not yet resolved. Any other thoughts? Keith

You can check for recently installed suspicious or unknown extensions.

  • lEssa2Paay 1.9 (im@s.edu)
  • toPbuyer 4.1 (Sd@Coq.net)

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Still no more popups or new tabs. Deleting those extensions seems to have worked. Thanks. Keith
