I am finding that after using Firefox for some time, and especially if I have quite a few tabs open, it becomes deathly slow. This is on a brand new laptop with 4GB ram and 2.4GHz processor, on Windows 8.1. It slows right down, including not responding to attempts to scroll either by clicking or by using the arrow keys, and sometimes giving the "not responding" message or completely jamming. Is this about time or number of tabs open?? How can I avert this problem?? Would it be better to have new windows rather than tabs?? Any other suggestions??

Unfortunately this kind of problem is often caused by an extension, and there's no simple way to find out which one.

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:

  • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click Help Help-29 and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

  • Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".

Safe Mode Fx 15 - Win

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.

Some added toolbar and anti-virus add-ons are known to cause Firefox issues. Disable All of them.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} While you are in safe mode;

Type about:preferences#advanced<Enter> in the address bar.

Under Advanced, Select General. Look for and turn off Use Hardware Acceleration.

Poke around safe web sites. Are there any problems?

Thanks, it's actually been fine today although I've been on less time and haven't had too many tabs open. Will see how it goes. Cheers.

You can check for problems with the sessionstore.js file in the Firefox profile folder that store session data.

Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost and you will have to recreate them (make a note or bookmark them if possible).

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.
