Search is completely useless if it stays in one directory level.

When I search at the level of SHOW ALL ALL BOOKMARKS I want it to go down through EVERY directory level

That should work, but Firefox doesn't show in what folder the found bookmarks are located

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

What should work? The addons? Or are you saying that FF is supposed to search all levels down, instead of just the current directory?

A search that is limited to just one directly is totally useless; if I knew which directory the URL was stored in, I would not NEED to search.

The addons require a restart, but that's not convenient right now...

The search box is global, i.e., when you search for bookmarks it checks all folders in all bookmark containers (toolbar, menu, unsorted).

If you want to confirm for yourself the scope of the search, just edit some bookmarks in different folders/containers with asdf and then search for asdf.

The problem, as cor-el mentioned, is that there is no column for "folder" where the bookmark is stored. That is what the extension adds.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} While you are in safe mode;

Type about:preferences#advanced<Enter> in the address bar.

Under Advanced, Select General. Look for and turn off Use Hardware Acceleration.

Poke around safe web sites. Are there any problems?

Then restart.
