Click the little x on the tab or use {Ctrl + F4} to close the active tab.

Click the close button on that tab. You can also right-click a tab and choose Close Tab from the menu.

You can middle-click a tab to close that tab.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

In other words it sounds like you are closing the whole Window with the X on title bar instead of closing a individual tab with one of the ways as mentioned above.
