You were using Sync incorrectly; it's made to synchronize data among multiple devices, not intended to be used as "backup media" when the operating system is re-installed. Your Sync data was cleared from the Sync when your reset the password for your Firefox Account. You missed seeing the warning message about that when went to set a new Firefox Account password. The original password was the '''"Key"''' to the encryption of your data and needed to "unlock" your data, a different password just wouldn't work.
