For the last two or three weeks, when i open a tab that I have entered the URL for, a second tab opens right next to it advertising some service or advertising something. I don't know why this started and I don't know how to get rid of it

When you open a

  • New tab you have two options Firefox Home and Blank Page
  • Is this happening in the New window? there may be an extra page

Go and check Settings > Home and Startup > New Page if you see anything there that you don't recognize or don't need remove them.
