Try to rebuild the Windows icon cache.

  1. Open the Task Manager (Shift+Ctrl+ESC)
  2. In the Process tab, right-click on the Explorer.exe process and select End Process.
  3. Open the file picker via "File > New Task (Run)" and click the Browse button.
  4. Type or Paste %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local in the File name field (AppData is a hidden folder).
  5. Select the IconCache.db file and use "Delete" in the right-click context menu to delete the file.
  6. After the IconCache.db file has been deleted, start a new explorer.exe process via "File > New Task" to get the desktop and Taskbar back.

The IconCache.db file is a hidden file, so make sure that you can see hidden files.

I did as you suggested. AppData/Local was displayed. IconCache.db was not there. Checked the AppData Folder on the left side of Winexplorer, opening „Local“, at the end of the column: IconCache.db, 13000KB. File deleted. The problem persisted! Restored from bin. Why is IconCache not appearing after „Browsing“, perhaps it is not in a folder? In „Local“ opening AppData directly, Winexplorer, an icon was displayed, looking like a blue screw.

Gave it a try with Ffportable-same problem. Chrome and IE are installed on this netbook, too. Set IE as default browser and the icons were IE, same applied for Chrome!! Just to check if it is general problem. No problems here. What could be the next steps to solve this mishap?

Is Firefox still set as the default browser?

You can try to set another browser as the default browser and then let Firefox again become the default browser.

You can try to set the icon manually to the Firefox.exe program via the right-click context menu (Properties).

Yes, after setting IE and Chrome as default browser, as mentioned, I set Ff as default browser via contextual menue, seems to be the same, because all icons have the symbol of the browser, normally. But I will try this as suggested in your post. When Chrome setting as default browser, how can I "de-default" Chrome? Simpley via "Options" in Ff? Do not have the netbook here-otherwise I would try this immediately. Thanks!

You can only set another browser as the default by starting that browser and find the place in the settings in that browser where you can make this change. That would probably the best way to do in cases like this where there is a problem. In Google Chrome you can click the Customize (3 bars) icon and open Settings and scroll to the bottom.

Went to "Options-Advanced: Firefox is currently your browser. What might be the next step, please?
