Hello,

I am running Thunderbird 24.4.0 on Windows 7. I am using no add-ons and I am only using a Gmail account with Thunderbird right now for testing.

I do not receive any new e-mail notifications. I did receive them once or twice before, but it is very random and rare when I do receive a new e-mail alert.

However when I maximize Thunderbird, it displays the new e-mail. So Thunderbird is indeed actually receiving the e-mail, it is just failing to notify me.

I have ensured notifications are enabled in the Menu Bar > Tools > Options.

I have tried using Add-ons such as:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/thunderbird/addon/new-mail-attention/

Which also do not help display alerts. However the "new mail attention" add-on does blink the Thunderbird icon on the Windows taskbar, so at least something can notify me.

I have also tried running Thunderbird in safe mode, and running it in compatibility mode for Windows Vista, both also did not help. This appears to be a bug in Thunderbird, as I have noticed other users mentioning the same issue.

Don't go with the "clean reinstall" quite yet. Is you Gmail account configured as an IMAP account? If yes, it is using a feature called "condstore" which is supposed to better coordinate activities when the account is accessed from multiple locations. It is known to be buggy though on Thunderbird's side and may miss incoming mails in this way.

The workaround is to disable that feature:

  1. On Windows, enter the Options window from either the application button or the Tools menu;
  2. Go into the Advanced tab and find the "Config Editor" in its General tab;
  3. Enter condstore into the search bar on top of the about:config window;
  4. Double-click on all mail.server.something.use_condstore entries to toggle them to "false" (as a minimum, this should be the "default" entry;
  5. restart Thunderbird and see if it fixes the problem.

Hey,

Certain Thunderbird problems can be solved by peforming a Clean Reinstall. This means you remove Thunderbird's Program Files then reinstall Thunderbird. Please follow these steps:

  1. Download the latest version of Thunderbird from http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/ and save the setup file to your computer.
  2. After the download is complete, close all Thunderbird windows (Click Exit/Quit from the menu button on the right).
    • Windows:
      • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\
      • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\
    • Mac: Delete Thunderbird from the Applications folder.
    • Linux: If you installed Thunderbird with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Installing Thunderbird on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Thunderbird Download Page, simply remove the folder thunderbird in your home directory.
  3. Now, go ahead and reinstall Thunderbird:
    1. Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    2. Once the wizard is finished, choose to open Thunderbird after clicking the Finish button.

WARNING: Do not run Thunderbird's uninstaller or use a third party remover as part of this process, because that could permanently delete your Thunderbird data, including but not limited to, extensions,emails, personal settings and saved passwords. These cannot be recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device!

Thank you rsx11m, your suggestion seems to have fixed it! Yes I did have Gmail configured as an IMAP account. Much appreciated.
