You can update Java by
- downloading the installer from the Java site (save to hard drive, close Firefox, run the installer
- from the Java Control Panel (Windows Start > Settings > Control Panel > Java, opens the Java Control Panel, click the Update tab, if it is there (newer versions remove this option in favor of auto updates, but the Update tab can be restored by editing the registry), click Update Now).
- Update Java:
- Download and update instructions: https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Using+the+Java+plugin+with+Firefox
- Removing old versions: http://www.java.com/en/download/faq/remove_olderversions.xml
- Remove multiple Java Console extensions (if needed): http://kb.mozillazine.org/Java#Multiple_Java_Console_extensions
- After the installation, start Firefox and check your version again.
