i am currently using firefox 153.0. can i restore firefox windows- and tab-structure as in sessionstore.jsonlz4 from a previous.jsonlz4 originating from a previous firefox version?

The remark means forwards compatibility is relied upon — as compared to backwards compatibility when downgrading from a newer install, that is not guaranteed. So you should be fine trying to restore older profile data on a current release version.
Your steps make sense and should work, you just might need to find a sessionstore backup that's not corrupted.
And also do these file operations when Firefox is completely shut down.

Yes.
Any update does the same — using the sessionstore from previous version(s) — so that forwards compatibility is being taken as granted every single update.
i assume your remark refers to actions taking place at the time of the version upgrade. i am stuck with a corrupted profile, have created a new one and try to restore a previous.jsonlz4 created from the previous version. apparently this won't work. the sessionstore.jsonlz4 created from the old previous.jsonlz4 is not used and overwritten with the current structure.
an applicable action would be to created a firefox-instance with the previos version, restore windows and tabs and subsequently perform the upgrade. where can i find installation packages for previous und current version?
