My firefox keeps redirecting me through two different websites before giving me my search results from yahoo, my preferred search engine is Google and I think my browser has been hjacked, I did a complete wipe of data and Firefox files and a dns cache clear from my computer but it seems it's still happening, any help would be appreciated

The desktop Firefox has not come with a Yahoo search engine since the Firefox 57.0 release as Mozilla and Yahoo even had a legal battle.

Perhaps an extension you have installed or updated recently in Firefox is the cause?. Or perhaps even some external software is adding this in Firefox.

I'm moving on to Chrome. I have this same issue. I have gone into settings several times on multiple occasions and have changed my preferred browser to Google. Each time I start FF up Yahoo is back. And my preferences are gone. I have had FF as my preferred browser for over 20 years. No more sadly.

Are preferences other than default search engine changed? That could be caused by external software and would call for a broader investigation.

Your default search engine (home page, etc.) can be changed by extensions (a type of add-on); that is the first thing to check. You can view, disable, and often remove unwanted or unknown extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • click the Extensions button (puzzle piece) on the toolbar > Manage Extensions
  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • type or paste about:addons in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the left column of the Add-ons page, click Extensions. On the right side, find the "Manage Your Extensions" heading.

If there is at least one extension before the next heading -- "Recommended Extensions" -- please continue:

Then cast a critical eye over the list below that heading. Any extensions Firefox installs for built-in features are hidden from this page, so everything listed here is your choice (and your responsibility) to manage. Anything suspicious or that you just do not remember installing or why? If in doubt, disable (or remove). For your privacy and security, don't let mystery programs linger here.

Any improvement?

Note: Sometimes extensions can frustrate access to this page. In that case, first restart Firefox in its Troubleshot Mode and then try again. See: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode -- Open, not Refresh.
