Not only can you view all of your bookmarks, downloads and history (by date) - you can sort them and organize them. You can copy and paste them (delete them) ....

But the Library has a very important feature : "Import and Backup"

You don't have to use the Libary - it doesn't get in the way, just being there , so why would you want to disable it  ? You might need it one day ..... (one never knows)

The Library is the place where you manage and organize your bookmarks and history and downloads. This is an interface to access the places.sqlite database that accidentally stores this data. There is also the sidebar for bookmarks and history where you can easily access this data.

Note that there is also a Library (bookshelf) toolbar button and a Library item in the "3-bar" Firefox menu button drop-down list that allows to access various items.

i appreciate the answer, however, i do not understand the redundancy. if you have 'bookmarks', why do you need the 'library'? i thought that the Library was just a 'holding' place and i started to delete some of 'old' junk and then noticed that it was deleting my bookmarks. that is reason for the question. any help?

I'm sorry that you weren't aware of the fact that you were deleting bookmarks - I have no idea what kind of "old junk" you thought you were deleting .....

If the purpose of the Library still is a mystery to you : I honestly wouldn't know what to add to the answers you've been given - maybe someone else will .....

As long as you haven't closed Firefox, you can use "Organize -> Undo" in the Library to undo any accidental deletes in the current session.

Note that all recent type list (e.g. Recently Bookmarked) show the result of a query and aren't real folders, so any action you take is done on the actual bookmark that can be stored in any bookmarks folder.

In the Library - upper left side, you'll see "Organize". When you click on it you will get a dropdown where you can choose "Undo" (keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Z).

Note that you may have to click Undo more than once. I usually use its keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Z and only check the Organize menu to see whether this button is still enabled (i.e. there is still Undo history. There is also a Redo item if you notice that you lose recent changes that you may want to take a note of before going back further.

i must be blind & stupid. i have been all over "Library" - right click/ left click/ from the 3bar drop down/ and from the Options screen and NO Organize in sight. i guess i will have to live with the missing bookmarks and if i can remember what they were, add them to bookmarks again. i really appreciate everyone's help. i am a 'neat-freak' and like to have things neat. the items i deleted i added to my bookmarks several years ago and therefore thought since they were in my bookmarks, they were good & solid. how silly of me. the thing is, the items that are listed in the Library were added years ago before i added Firefox/ Mozilla as a browser and that was why i thought i was safe in cleaning up the Library. there really aught to be a warning somewhere about this. again, thank you everyone for help and suggestions.

This is not about the Library item in a menu, but about the Bookmarks Manager (Library) that you can open via "Show All Bookmarks", also accessible via the Bookmarks menu.

I FOUND THE MANAGER!!!! sorry, i don't usually yell but i lost it for the moment. thank you. the items i deleted by mistake will not come back however with all of your patience, kindness & understanding, i have learned a few new tricks. i will copy & paste this info onto my computer so if i get clean-crazy again, i will have comfort in knowing how to retrieve. i deleted the items hours ago and will try to remember what i dumped. they might have been things i've been meaning to get rid of anyway. thank you. thank you. thank you.

Did you try to press Ctrl+Z until the Undo no longer is enabled ? If you hadn't closed and restarted Firefox then you should be able to restore these lost bookmarks. Just in case, you can also try a search in the Library for any of these bookmarks in case that were moved to another folder.

Otherwise you still have the option to restore the most recent compressed .jsonlz4 in the backups in the bookmarkbackups folder.

• Bookmarks -> Show All Bookmarks -> Import & Backup -> Restore

Note that this will replace all current bookmarks, so you may want to create an HTML backup to be sure.

The name of an automatically created JSON bookmarks backup in the bookmarkbackups folder includes a total item count (folders and separators included) and an hash value to prevent saving the same backup more than once. You also see this count in the Restore menu drop-down list.
