Thunderbird failed with outgoing server error message
My thunderbird email is broken and I cannot interpret the error message. I found a similar problem at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1281109, but I have not been able to follow the solution.
The error message is:
Sending of the message failed. The message could not be sent because connecting to Outgoing server (SMTP) promail.ptd.net failed. The server may be unavailable or is refusing SMTP connections. Please verify that your Outgoing server (SMTP) settings are correct and try again.
When I access my email at ptd.net, using firefox, I can make a full connect. But I cannot connect to email using Thunderbird, which is my preferred email tool.
My hope is to have a dialog in this thread with someone who can walk me through the steps to get thunderbird working. Can someone help?

To be honest, I found that I can run Thunderbird properly on a different PC, thus the problem is isolated to the PC I had been using. I will close this issue and use my alternative PC.

Currently - I tried to find server settings info at that site and I'm getting a timeout error saying temporarily unavailable or too busy, so maybe the server is having issues.
What SMTP outgoing server settings are you using ?
- In 'Account Settings'
- In left pane scroll down to botton and click on 'Outgoing Server (SMTP)'
- It will show you a list of all your outgoing servers.
- Select the one used for the account and click on 'Edit'
Make sure you have the following:
- server name: promail.ptd.net
- Port: 587
- Connection SEcurity: STARTTLS
- Authentication Method: Normal Password
- Username: try full email address or if it still fails try just the first part the bit before the @

I suggest you try running you original PC in safe mode with networking as a diagnostic process. While I strongly suspect the antivirus will be the problem it never behooves us to be closed mined about other possibilities.
How to do that
- Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX
- If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.
