I have the bookmarks tool bar open with the ability to click on the two arrows on the right to see additional bookmarks. I have recently tried to bookmark some links like I always do and they don't show up in the toolbar. Anyone else have this problem? I did not change any settings. Did the recent update change some settings I don't know about or is this a bug. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!!!

Update!!! I may have figured it out. I use VPN and with NordVPN on this computer. I just changed my location of my server to a different server. I just tried two new links to bookmark including one of the links Cor-el provide and now they are posting to the toolbar. I will have to check my VPN location if this starts happening again. Thanks Strafy, jscher2000 and Cor-el for all your help!!!!!!!

When you bookmark a page, an Edit This Bookmark tab will show up. Ensure that the folder is set to Bookmarks Toolbar and not another folder (e.g. Bookmarks Menu, Other Bookmarks). Your bookmark should appear on the toolbar instantly.

See support article: Change Location of a Bookmark

Strafy: I have done all that. I have it set to Bookmark Toolbar but it will not show up. I even checked my individual folders with no luck finding it there. One of my bookmarks would not open, so I deleted it and tried to re-bookmark it and it does not appear anywhere. Also tried a new link to bookmark, it does not appear anywhere. I understand there isn't a limit on bookmarks unless I read some of the other posts wrong.

If you check here, is the bookmark listed:

menu button > Library > Bookmarks

The Recent Bookmarks list should show newly added bookmarks in chronological order (most recent first).

If you load the missing site from the list and then click the blue star in the address bar and then check the folder, it should show where the bookmark is saved.

Hi jscher2000 Yes id does show when I use your method. I wonder if my toolbar has reached its limit and I have to go through the Library option to get to any new bookmarks. Maybe it is time for spring cleaning of my bookmarks unless this is a flaw of the updated Firefox browser. Thanks for sharing your info. I really appreciate.

I'm not aware of a limit, but I think the scrolling method is inconvenient: holding the mouse over a tiny triangle at the top or bottom of the overflow list. What do you think about using some folders to group bookmarks on the bar? A little grouping might be enough to avoid scrolling, if that is the problem.

There's an article on this: Use bookmark folders to organize your bookmarks

I have been using folders, have 14 now. May have to see if I can group more together to great new folders. Maybe that will help. If anyone else has any suggestions, don't hesitate to share on this thread.

UPDATE: I now have 17 folders and combined some bookmarks into these folders. Also went through and deleted about 25-30 bookmarks. Still have the same problem, a new bookmark did not show up on the tool bar as well as recent bookmarks, but they do show up in the library. I am guessing Firefox update messed things up but could be wrong

more options

Just for reference, I'm attaching screenshots of

  • Current page bookmark editor, showing where the folder that stores the bookmark is displayed
  • Bookmarks Toolbar overflow list expanded for that bookmark

(This is a test profile, so it doesn't have enough bookmarks on the overflow list to require scrolling.)

that is exactly what I do. and I scan the overflow from top to bottom even though I have it set to automatically sort and I start the name it a number so it will be at the top. Still no luck. Thanks for sharing though

Hmm, new bookmarks usually are added at the end of the list regardless of name. How did you set your Bookmarks Toolbar to sort automatically? Are you using one of these add-ons for that:

The one I use is the second link. It has worked great for a good six months and still is working fine. I don't think it has anything to do with my problem, just nice and convenient.

Unless you have a different folder named "Bookmarks Toolbar" in a different location, I don't know why you aren't seeing them where you expect them. If you expand the folder tree in the bookmark editor, is the current location the top level Bookmarks Toolbar with that specific icon?

I have not changed anything for years. Wasn't that long ago that the new. All bookmarks were showing when added. Maybe the last update which happened recently has caused the problem. If it is possible to contact Mozilla maybe I will do that. Or hope others are having the same problem and contact them. Thanks for all your help!!

If you use Sync then best is to disconnect Sync temporarily during troubleshooting.

This can be caused by a problem with the places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite databases in the Firefox profile folder.

  • use "Verify Integrity" button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page

If errors are reported with "Verify Integrity", close and restart Firefox or reboot and retry.

If "Verify Integrity" cannot repair places.sqlite, rename/remove all places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed. Firefox will rebuild places.sqlite and restore the bookmarks from a recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

  • keep a backup copy of places.sqlite in case a new places.sqlite database has to be created

You lose the history when a new places.sqlite is created.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

Hi Corel: Ok, reading over all your information. I stopped sync. Went into trouble shooting and ran verify but do not understand all the information that was provided. Still no luck. Trying to see about the links you shared. Just tried another saving of a bookmark. Does not show up in the toolbar but shows up under Bookmarks in the library. Little confused on what you suggested and the links.

Using a VPN shouldn't affect bookmarking as this should only affect the network connection settings, so I'm not sure this worked for you unless this extension does weird things.

Hi Cor-el. Maybe you are right. Having the same problems this morning. Tried a couple different servers and so far no luck. I will keep working at it. Maybe an extension or something is causing the problem. I will keep this thread in case I need to refer back to what everyone wrote. Thanks again for your help.
