TBird will receive gmail but will not send emails with TBird wants new password..

I can send and receive gmail online OK. I have a problem now that used to work. When I want to email a link to a page or send an email directly from TBird I get and error message. I tried retyping the gmail password but I get the same error message. I tried following some of the instructions on other pages, but I got all tangled up in all the words and examples not matching what is on my TBird

have you configured two factor authentication on Google (they send you a text usually with a password)
