How do I get the bottom status bar to show date when I mouse over it?
The bottom right-hand corner of my display shows the current time. Sometimes when I mouse over it the day and date appear, sometimes not. Can I make this more consistent?

This doesn't sound like a built-in feature. Are you mousing over the Windows XP Task Bar, or is it displayed on the Firefox Add-on bar?
For the Windows task bar, if a tooltip doesn't show within a few seconds, I generally mouse over something else and then come back to it to see whether it works on the second try...
