Why are all the close tab buttons missing?

Yesterday, I was using Firefox 25.0.1 with no issues. Today I launched Firefox, only to find that the [X] buttons for the tabs are gone! Instead, I saw a single [x] button on the rightmost side of the tabs bar, which closes the active tab. There were no changes/updates that I made to Firefox between yesterday and today. I checked the browser.tabs.closeButtons parameter, and saw that it was still set to 1. Changing it has no effect. What's going on? Thanks, Teraforce88

I have this same problem. Firefox 25.0.1 was working fine, with tabs as normal, until a few hours ago when they simply disappeared. Like the OP, I have the "Hide Tab Bar with One Tab" extension. I disabled it, and the 'x's were immediately visible again, so there must be something with the extension itself that causes them to disappear.

The developer of that extension says that the next update should take care of it, and that it should be within the next few hours, or maybe a day. You can see that exchange here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/hide-tab-bar-with-one-tab/reviews/

Do you have any Tab related Extensions installed?

The System Details List shows: "Hide Tab Bar With One Tab"

Are you using a userChrome.css file that might be causing this?

I disabled that extention, and what do you know? The [x] buttons are back! Of course, I now I have to deal with 1 tab always being present, but I'll take that over no [x] buttons on the tab.

Thanks!!

If you have a mouse or trackball with a scroll wheel or middle-click button you can use them to not only open links into a new tab but also middle-click on the tabs to close them.

Relief to know it's popped up b/c of the Firefox update. Hope this prob disappears upon the next update.

Bookmarking this page just in case that doesn't happen soon. I'm getting tired of looking at "Phandroid" :-P

What really pisses me off is that we have to use an addon to make Firefox work like IT SHOULD. Now FF gets updated again and our addon is broken. The arrogance of the developers who made the call to force a tab bar at all times is astounding. Because they always have tabs open, I guess that means the rest of the internet should too.

Same issue, the 'x' on the upper left corner of the tab is an important feature, please resolve.

Try this:

  1. change the value of the Browser.tabs.closeButtons ( http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.tabs.closeButtons) to 3.
  2. Restart browser.
  3. Change it back to 1
  4. Restart browser.

The "close button" is back :)

"change the value of the Browser.tabs.closeButtons ( http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.tabs.closeButtons) to 3. "

I'm sure this made sense at the time of sending, but the link goes to a blank page and as an elderly punter, I have no idea how to change this setting.

I always have many tabs open as I muse around researching many subjects on the web and wish to be able to return to them swiftly, or I'm just making comparisons on prices or whatever. Frequently I need to cull the tabs and now that the close cross has disappeared I have to select close tab each time, which is unnecessarily messy. Please bring back the crosses and meanwhile issue a quick fix that's easily understood by everyone.

Indeed, I will be leaving this tab open as I await an answer, then I'll close it!!

dr1fix was not careful when he posted the link as ) was added on end. The link is http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.tabs.closeButtons

To change this setting you type about:config in the Location (address) bar. Filter for browser.tabs.closeButtons on top Right-click this Preference and modify it as suggested.

As mentioned in this thread there are a few Tab related extensions that caused this issue of no tab close buttons if using a older version of it. The common one being the "hide-tab-bar-with-one-tab" extension which has since been fixed by the author in 1.2beta3 version.

As I mentioned before, If you have a mouse or trackball that can do middle-click you can not only use it to open links into a new tab but also hover over tab and middle-click it it close it. This feature has existed since forever.

Well, I filtered to the correct statement and it was set at 1, meaning a close button on every tab. I fooled around with other values and then returned it to 1, and lo and behold, the buttons returned to all tabs. Now how weird is that. I repeated the process and now I have buttons on the left and right side of each tab!!!!!

Hopefully I can get back to just one button in options and tab mix, but two is better than none. This is truly weird.

Edit:

I closed Firefox and when I restarted the close tab buttons were gone again. Grrrrr!!

Are you using any tab related extensions?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

Many thanks cor-el. That sorted it.

It was the Hotspot Shield extension which was specifically excluded in safe mode and the single close buttons were all back in place. Start it up in normal mode and there they were still, re-enable the extension and they vanished again. End of problem. Very grateful.
